Working with Families

Complete this course to earn 1 CPD hour

Looks at the benefits and challenges of harmonious staff–family relationships in aged care, as well as tools and resources to help nurses promote it

Older people benefit when staff and families work together – so do staff and families. Establishing positive staff–family relationships, however, is not without its challenges and there are a number of tools and other resources available that allow aged care services to appraise their practices, identify gaps and support positive staff–family relationships.

This module takes the situation of staff conflict with families and reframes it as a person-centred partnership in which all stakeholders are recognised as ‘people’ whose goals need to be negotiated to ensure the best outcome for the older person at the centre of care and support.

The module outlines relevant research as well as tools that have been developed to implement and audit constructive relationships in residential aged care. It also includes guideline recommendations and indicators for building staff–family relationships, and a section on measuring these relationships to identify gaps and areas which would benefit from further education.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
