Addresses the carer’s dilemma in balancing risk and rights, while advocating a systems approach to risk management

Managing clinical risk in aged care, be it residential, community or hospital-based, is about identifying those circumstances where people are put at risk of harm and then acting to prevent or manage those risks while striving to uphold personal rights.

Improving quality and safety for older people, while upholding these rights and managing risk, is a complex challenge for carers. Meeting this challenge requires an understanding of the theoretical concepts and constructs of quality, risk, stakeholder rights and evidence-based practice (EBP).

In this module, you will work through a personal vignette before addressing the basic concepts and related constructs. You will then explore, respectively, the broader quality and safety context in acute healthcare and the other settings in which older people receive healthcare, and study a proposed step-by-step approach to balancing rights and risk in decision making.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
