Addresses the inequity in the health of aged rural populations compared with their metropolitan counterparts

In Australia, like other developed countries, the population is growing older faster in rural areas. So, too, is there an imbalance in the health of rural populations compared with those in the city, with higher levels of disease risk factors and illness reported in people living in rural and remote areas.

This module highlights demography – working from the premise that we the need to properly define what exactly is ‘rural’ – as well as the range of challenges for the health- and aged-care system, particularly in rural areas where workforce shortages, transport issues, rural stoicism, lack of access and distance are confounding factors.

You will consider the different pattern of health needs of the older Indigenous population – many of whom live in remote and very remote areas – and professional practice in the rural context. Finally, you will address the education of the rural workforce, as well as initiatives that support interdisciplinary care for older people in rural areas.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
