Psychological debriefing


There is quite a lot of debate at the moment over the efficacy of psychological debriefing immediately following a critical incident or traumatic event.

Time magazine has an interview with Scott Lilienfeld, a professor of psychology at Emory University.

Scott discusses  “critical incident stress debriefing,” a technique that is often used to treat survivors of disasters  such as 911 and the New Orleans hurricane.

His research has found that some versions of this technique may in fact double the chances that a trauma victim will suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
